Facebook Goes Further Asymmetrical, You Can Tag Non-Friends in Comments

Facebook has learned quite a few lessons from Google+ and applied them already, not only when it comes to features but to the way they're announced, as more come from the engineers that work on them announcing the changes on Facebook itself.

The latest example is a subtle change to the ability to tag any user on Facebook in comments, not just friends, for those that have enabled the "Subscribe" ability.

This makes it possible to notify them about your response, further moving Facebook towards an asymmetrical friend model, like Twitter and Google+.

"Heads up to those using Subscribe on your profiles: Now you as the owner of a post can tag non-friends in the comments thread of your public posts, which will make dialogue easier. When you tag the user, they will be notified that you responded to their comment. Right now this feature is only available on profiles," Facebook announced.

People Are Really Pining for Windows Tablets

One wouldn't expect it from what the media has been saying over the past couple of months, but it looks like consumers really want media slates loaded with a good Windows version.

Wheather it's because Windows is just such a long-lived software platform or because of some other reason, the operating system ended up in a clear lead during a certain, tablet-related survey.

 Apparently, a lot of people would just love to get their hands on a tablet that runs Windows.

Obviously, this is not the first conclusion people would jump to if asked about the subject based purely on the media's words.

After all, the Apple iPad has been selling by the thousands and Android-loaded slates are the only competition it has.

In the end, though, this only means that Microsoft just doesn't have a Windows version suited enough for tablet devices, not that users don't want Windows on their mobile devices.

“When we survey consumers, it becomes very clear that Windows is still a very popular brand,” said Sarah Rotman Epps, Forrester.

Of course, saying that Windows-loaded tablets don't exist would be a very big blunder, but the fact is that those aren't actually media slates.

The few such things that companies tried to market did not take off because they lacked the content of Android Market and the Apple app store.

Windows 7 also wasn't designed as an OS focused on touch input, so the functionality just wasn't the same.

Soon, however, Windows 8 will appear, an OS that it will support ARM and will undoubtedly approach touch input better.

At that point, there will likely be a change in user perspective and the market shares of the Apple iPad and Android tablets will go through some serious changes, none of them fortuitous.

Then again, Apple and Google are also making better OS versions, so just what will come of all this remains to be seen

Steve Jobs Movie Coming Up

In what was only a natural move for the movie industry, Sony Pictures is reportedly pushing to secure rights for making a motion picture about Apple’s late co-founder based entirely on the upcoming biography by Walter Isaacson.

Apple’s board of directors was saddened to announce earlier this week that Steve Jobs, the company’s visionary and former CEO, had passed away.

 Jobs’ death was the result of an aggravating condition following several attempts to fight off a rare form of pancreatic cancer. It is still unknown whether it was the return of his cancer, or other complications following a liver transplant in 2009, that finally claimed Jobs’ life.

The media continues to spit out countless reports about the life of the genius, three days after his death.

One of the most recent ones says that Sony Pictures is lobbying the publishers of Steve Jobs’ biography to acquire rights to make a feature film. No other studio is mentioned as attempting to do the same.

The news comes via deadline.com, whose exclusive report on the matter says the deal is $1 million against $3 million, and that Mark Gordon will be the biopic’s producer. As expected, Sony Pictures declined to comment on the rumor.

The biography in question, simply titled ‘Steve Jobs’, is authored Walter Isaacson, former CNN chairman and Time Magazine managing editor. Isaacson is putting the finishing touches on the book as you are reading these lines.

The author has confirmed to the media that he plans to include one final scene based on his last discussion with the Apple visionary, which took place just weeks ago.

The scene is said to includes Jobs’ acknowledgement to Isaacson that he would not be around for long, and that he had agreed to have a biography written mainly because he wanted his kids to know him better.

The book was initially scheduled to hit the shelves in November. It is now slated to become available on October 24, both in e-format, and as hardcover.

Deadline appropriately points out that Sony Pictures should be well entitled to carry out the task of depicting Jobs’ life in a feature-length movie. The studio is also behind the Oscar-nominated The Social Network, and Money ball.

iPhone 4S Lands at AT&T, Sprint and Verizon on October 14th

Cupertino-based Apple has just announced plans to bring to the market a new flavor of their highly popular iPhone, one that will arrive on shelves at three major wireless carriers in the United States, namely AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, and which sports the name of iPhone 4S. 

This iPhone model has been long rumored to be on its way to the market before the end of the year and to arrive on shelves at Sprint as well, and all that has been officially confirmed by Apple. 

 However, the technical specifications for the new device are a bit different from what we were expecting. 

Initial reports suggested that Apple would release the new iPhone 4S as a small improvement over the already popular iPhone 4 model, yet it seems that there is a little more to it than that. 

For starters, we should note that the new device arrives on shelves with support for both GSM and CDMA bands. It does not have 4G capabilities, but it is a world phone, and many users will certainly enjoy that. 

There is also an A5 dual-core application processor that Apple packed inside the new device, which should translate into increasing performance capabilities, which should go along pretty well with the new iOS 5 (the platform will be released on October 12th). 

On the back, the new device sports an 8-megapixel photo snapper with support for full HD video recording (1080p HD), and a series of other enhancements as well. 

The new iPhone 4S also comes to the market with an improved battery life, which should offer increased usage time, with up to 8 hours of talk time on 3G. 

iPhone 4S will arrive on shelves in black and white flavors, and will include internal memory options starting at 16GB and going all the way to 64GB. 

The price for the new model was set at $199 (around 150 Euros) for the 16GB model, $299 (about 225 Euros) for the 32GB flavor, and at $399 (approximately 300 Euros) for the 64GB iteration.

The new device will be put on pre-order starting with October 7th. It will become available for purchase in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK on Friday, October 14th.

Samsung Sells Over 10 Million Galaxy Handsets in South Korea

South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung has managed to sell over 10 million Galaxy devices in its homeland country, the latest reports on the matter suggest.

Apparently, the company managed to top the selling charts in September, ending the month with 57.3 percent market share in the country, a little lower than in August.

However, September marks the third consecutive months during which the leading handset vendor accounts for more than 55 percent of the market in its home country.


 In addition to announcing that it sold over 10 million Galaxy devices in South Korea, Samsung also announced sales numbers for each of the handsets involved.

Thus, the Galaxy S II smartphone reached 3.8 million sold units in the country, while the Galaxy S smartphone went up to 3.2 million units.

Clearly, this year's flagship model was a great success, as the company already sold over 10 million units around the world, and is expected to sell much more before the year is over.

The new handset has just debuted in the United States, and when wireless carriers like Sprint and AT&T already added it to their offerings, while T-Mobile should launch it on October 12th.

The mobile phone maker also announced that the sales of its Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet PC reached 600,000 units in South Korea.

The Android device was launched last year in September, but its market performance was underwhelming, it seems.

Before the year is over, the handset vendor should bring new Galaxy devices to the market, including the large Galaxy Note smartphone, or the LTE-enabled flavor of Samsung Galaxy S II.

Moreover, the vendor announced the upcoming availability of more affordable Android phones in the Galaxy family of devices, including the Galaxy R and Galaxy W smartphones, among others.

Samsung has been hard at world with releasing smartphones that can top Apple's iPhone, and newer handsets like Galaxy S II have brought it one step closer to that.

Windows Phone 7.5 Mango Now Available for 50% of Users

Roughly one week ago, Redmond-based software giant Microsoft has started the roll-out of a new software update for its Windows Phone users, and has made significant progress in the area, it seems.

The company notes that they already managed to make the new OS flavor available for half of Windows Phone devices out there, and that updates have been successful so far.


 Most of the Windows Phone devices out there have started to receive the update, with some minor exceptions that we mentioned for both the United States and for the global market.

Apparently, the first wave of updates were successful on all handset models out there, in every country and on every carrier that started the roll-out.

“On behalf of the engineering team, I want pass on a big thank you for updating your phones so quickly, since it helps us gather the data we need to make decisions more rapidly,” Eric Hautala, general manager, Customer Experience Engineering, Microsoft, notes in a blog post.

“In fact, the update success rates we’re seeing look so good we’ve decided to open the spigot ahead of schedule, and make Windows Phone 7.5 available to 50 percent of eligible customers starting right now,” he continues.

At the moment, Microsoft is still collecting and analyzing installation data from various smaller carriers, and it needs a little longer before making sure that all is good for all Windows Phone users to receive Mango.

“I know some of you have questions about how Windows Phones are selected to receive the update. Put simply, it’s done totally at random, with absolutely no preference for carrier, model, or country,” Hautala explains.

Radeon HD 6900 and GeForce GTX 580 Successors to Arrive in 6 Months Time

Users waiting for AMD and Nvidia to release their next-generation graphics cards will have about six more months to wait until the replacements of the current Radeon HD 6900 and GeForce GTX 580 will arrive, states a report that recently hit the Web.


 The information was provided by Taiwanese graphics card makers who told SweClockers they don't expect any new high-performance models to arrive in the near future from AMD or Nvidia.

Instead, it may take the two companies as much as six months to release their replacements for the current Radeon HD 6900 and GeForce GTX 580.

This report also seems to be confirmed by several other independent sources cited by the same publication, who believe that the two GPU makers will actually release their high-end solutions in spring or summer of 2012.

This however won't mean that the winter of 2011 will pass without any new GPUs being introduced, but these solutions will address the mainstream and notebook markets.

The main problem that need to be surpassed by the two GPU makers seems to be TSMC's inability to mass produce complex chips built using the 28nm fabrication node, as the yields achieved by the foundry are nowhere near the level they were expected to be.

Even though they use different design approaches, both AMD' Southern Islands and Nvidia's Kepler architectures were designed to increase the programmability of the graphics cards based on them.

The two companies took this route since they both feel that general purpose GPU computing could have a huge impact on next-generation machines as well as applications, and they want to prepare for when this moment will arrive.

In addition to the improved programmability, AMD's and Nvidia high-end GPUs should also deliver better gaming performance, as they will most probably include more shader units, thanks to the move to the new fabrication process.
