Facebook Goes Further Asymmetrical, You Can Tag Non-Friends in Comments

Facebook has learned quite a few lessons from Google+ and applied them already, not only when it comes to features but to the way they're announced, as more come from the engineers that work on them announcing the changes on Facebook itself.

The latest example is a subtle change to the ability to tag any user on Facebook in comments, not just friends, for those that have enabled the "Subscribe" ability.

This makes it possible to notify them about your response, further moving Facebook towards an asymmetrical friend model, like Twitter and Google+.

"Heads up to those using Subscribe on your profiles: Now you as the owner of a post can tag non-friends in the comments thread of your public posts, which will make dialogue easier. When you tag the user, they will be notified that you responded to their comment. Right now this feature is only available on profiles," Facebook announced.

People Are Really Pining for Windows Tablets

One wouldn't expect it from what the media has been saying over the past couple of months, but it looks like consumers really want media slates loaded with a good Windows version.

Wheather it's because Windows is just such a long-lived software platform or because of some other reason, the operating system ended up in a clear lead during a certain, tablet-related survey.

 Apparently, a lot of people would just love to get their hands on a tablet that runs Windows.

Obviously, this is not the first conclusion people would jump to if asked about the subject based purely on the media's words.

After all, the Apple iPad has been selling by the thousands and Android-loaded slates are the only competition it has.

In the end, though, this only means that Microsoft just doesn't have a Windows version suited enough for tablet devices, not that users don't want Windows on their mobile devices.

“When we survey consumers, it becomes very clear that Windows is still a very popular brand,” said Sarah Rotman Epps, Forrester.

Of course, saying that Windows-loaded tablets don't exist would be a very big blunder, but the fact is that those aren't actually media slates.

The few such things that companies tried to market did not take off because they lacked the content of Android Market and the Apple app store.

Windows 7 also wasn't designed as an OS focused on touch input, so the functionality just wasn't the same.

Soon, however, Windows 8 will appear, an OS that it will support ARM and will undoubtedly approach touch input better.

At that point, there will likely be a change in user perspective and the market shares of the Apple iPad and Android tablets will go through some serious changes, none of them fortuitous.

Then again, Apple and Google are also making better OS versions, so just what will come of all this remains to be seen

Steve Jobs Movie Coming Up

In what was only a natural move for the movie industry, Sony Pictures is reportedly pushing to secure rights for making a motion picture about Apple’s late co-founder based entirely on the upcoming biography by Walter Isaacson.

Apple’s board of directors was saddened to announce earlier this week that Steve Jobs, the company’s visionary and former CEO, had passed away.

 Jobs’ death was the result of an aggravating condition following several attempts to fight off a rare form of pancreatic cancer. It is still unknown whether it was the return of his cancer, or other complications following a liver transplant in 2009, that finally claimed Jobs’ life.

The media continues to spit out countless reports about the life of the genius, three days after his death.

One of the most recent ones says that Sony Pictures is lobbying the publishers of Steve Jobs’ biography to acquire rights to make a feature film. No other studio is mentioned as attempting to do the same.

The news comes via deadline.com, whose exclusive report on the matter says the deal is $1 million against $3 million, and that Mark Gordon will be the biopic’s producer. As expected, Sony Pictures declined to comment on the rumor.

The biography in question, simply titled ‘Steve Jobs’, is authored Walter Isaacson, former CNN chairman and Time Magazine managing editor. Isaacson is putting the finishing touches on the book as you are reading these lines.

The author has confirmed to the media that he plans to include one final scene based on his last discussion with the Apple visionary, which took place just weeks ago.

The scene is said to includes Jobs’ acknowledgement to Isaacson that he would not be around for long, and that he had agreed to have a biography written mainly because he wanted his kids to know him better.

The book was initially scheduled to hit the shelves in November. It is now slated to become available on October 24, both in e-format, and as hardcover.

Deadline appropriately points out that Sony Pictures should be well entitled to carry out the task of depicting Jobs’ life in a feature-length movie. The studio is also behind the Oscar-nominated The Social Network, and Money ball.
